He scowled right back at me then replied, “No, you weren’t.”
Placing my hands on my hips and narrowed my eyes then I asked, “How would you know, kid?”
“Cause my dad would’ve blown you away with his gun.” He said then crossed his arms as a self-satisfying smirk grew on his face.
“Don’t get cocky, kid.” I said then jabbed him in the chest as I took a step forward then added, “because I saw your dad leave and he didn’t even know that I was there.”
Daniel’s face blanched as his arms dropped to the side. His mouth opened and closed but now noise came out. He was totally speechless. Good. Now we can get a move on without his whining giving us away.
I motioned with my hand as I said, “C’mon. We gotta hustle if we ain’t gonna get caught.”
He kicked a rock down the sidewalk and shoved his hands into his jean pockets as he glared right back at me. Sheesh, what an attitude.
“Whatever.” I tossed my hand in the air, turned then snatched his hand in mine to make sure he didn’t try and run off. I grumbled, “We gotta move, kid.”
He grumped right on back, “Quit calling me ‘kid’.”
I tugged harder as we moved on down the walkway towards my impromptu base camp. Daniel kept pulling his arm as we walked but I kept a hard grip on his hand. What is his deal?
His fingers started to pry at my iron grip so I stopped and looked his way. I asked, “Got a problem?”
“Yeah.” He pointed down at his and my hand. “Can you let go?”
I shook my head, “Nope.”
Daniel bent his knee and thrust his foot out. As his sneaker came closer to its target it became clear to what he was trying to kick. I barely sidestepped out of the way before he made contact with my shin.
Yanking on his hand again I growled, “Will ya quit it? If we make a fuss here then people will call the cops on us. Ya want that kid?”
He stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry. Of all the indignant little starfish dookies. My hand reached out with the palm open and struck the side of his face.
The area on his right side turned red as he reached up with his left hand and felt the residue sting of the attack. His eyes flashed between his normal color and gold as tears brimmed his eyelids.
“Ah,” I said and added as my eyebrows rose, “Sorry?”
The kid’s left hand closed into a fist and pulled back as his eyes stuck gold. A deep rumble traveled up from his chest and emerged from his mouth as a deafening roar.
Eep. I let his hand go as Daniel begun to change in broad daylight into his wolfen form.
