Laughter echoed over the rolling waves as the approaching boat glided in next to ours. The dark man eyes glittered with a smirk then snickered, “So, lovely to see you Luna.”
“Watch it.” She snarled to show more teeth. The man continued to wear his grin and turned away from us. In hushed voices he chatted with the other person that had stood behind him. He made sure to block our view from the other guest.
Luna remarked, “Look. I don’t have time to sit around while you ogle your new girlfriend.”
He tossed a glance over his shoulder and frowned. The man replied, “Who says that she’s new? For all you know is that you were merely a stepping stone in the grand scheme of things.”
She stepped forward and I held out my arm to stop her. It was my turn to keep the peace. She let another snarl escape. The man turned back around and motioned his chin my way.
“What with the kid wolf? He said and added, “A bit tame, don’t you think?”
That thought never occurred to me until now. Out of all the werewolf movies the werewolf was an uncontrollable beast out for blood. I glanced over at Luna. She too was a bit tame considering that she was also still feeling the effects of our recent change.
Skin that felt like hot coals being brushed against it and tender nerves. I spat, “I was told that not all supernatural things are as we mortals were taught.”
He did a slow clap with his hands and let out a dark laugh then replied, “Indeed, young pup. Indeed.”
The dark man tried to transfer to our boat. Luna got in front of me and spread her hands. She growled, “Not a step closer, Ray. Or have you forgotten our agreement?”
So, that’s the dark man’s name? Ray. I wonder who was standing behind him. Luna had mentioned witches. Was that woman a witch?
Ray’s dark laughter pulled me back as he replied, “No. I have not.”
“Where is Pearl?” She asked and glanced over to where her friend laid prone on the front of the ship.
Again another mirth of laughter escaped his lips and he motioned towards the tied up girl, “Why, Luna, is the shark eyesight that bad? She’s over there.”
Luna squinted her eyes and I realized that maybe Ray had a point. She started to go towards Pearl but I muttered under my breath, “Stop. This doesn’t feel right.”
She halted mid-stride and turned back my way. Her dark beady eyes stared back. Luna asked, “How do you know? I don’t feel it.”
I took a chance and peered over at the girl tied up in ropes and noticed a slight shimmer. The hackles on the back of my neck rose as lips peeled away from sharp teeth and I growled. Luna tossed her head back and forth.
How could she not feel the dark energy? Was her being a shark preventing her from sensing it? We both glanced over at Pearl. For a fraction of a second her image blinked.
Ray asked, “I thought you were in a hurry, Luna? Or is your shark brain taking over?”
Another thought hit me. Luna might not be able to see her friend and her magic might be on the blitz but one thing that sharks have is an amazing sense of smell.
“Luna,” I called out and she turned back to me. I nodded towards Pearl then said, “Do you smell her?”
Her shark eyes winced for a moment as her mouth held open then closed. She inhaled moving her head backwards. Ray watched her after I mentioned the sense of smell. He reached into his long baggy sleeves.
Luna exhaled then turned towards Ray. She growled, “Liar.”
“Ah, the jig is up.” He raised his hands up into surrender and stepped to one side. Ray nodded at the young woman who stood behind him just as she released a hot fiery orange fireball.
I dashed and knocked Luna to one side as the fireball launched straight towards us. Hot searing pain engulf me as the flames licked at the fur. The force smacked me back to the other side of the boat.
Some water splashed over onto the fire. Great. Nothing like singed wet dog hair and a burning boat to set the mood.
