Moon Marked: Hostage Part 4

Several sharp jabs hit my gut in succession. I crumpled up into a ball and gritted my teeth to weather through the wave of pain. As the moonlight kissed my skin a sensation of ants crawling over me then biting all at once.

“Gahh,” I cried out. Luna shot a glance over her shoulder as the boat took another big wave. It crested and dropped down as my body became airborne for a mere second.

Her eyes widened as I slammed back down into the boat before she slowed the boat to a stop. She exclaimed, “Holy Triton!”

Moonlight caressed her skin and blue light rippled over it with a silvery sheen. She fell from her seat onto the floorboards. We both cried out between labored breaths enduring the hot searing transformation.

Luna said between clenched teeth, “Dang it. Why tonight?”

I unleashed a panged howl as my bones and joints shifted and snapped into place. Tendons  lengthened as muscles grew and tightened. Another fury pain of ant bites swathed over my entire body.

A prickling sensation rolled over me as the boat rocked in the ocean. Fur sprouted in small fuzz all over then begun to grow. I raked my hand over the floor as claws grew from my fingertips leaving claw marks behind.

Over by the chair Luna writhed and kicked as her form changed taking on a sleeker and rubber like look. A big dorsal fin grew from her spine as her neck and shoulders fused together. Four distinct gills on each side formed and moved with her breathing.

Somewhere out in the sea the sound of another motor echoed over the waves. Our contact was on his way. If Luna or I didn’t finish transforming then we’re in trouble.

The constant purr of a motor sounded in the background as the world rocked back and forth. Man that beer hit me harder than it should have. I tried to roll over but found myself stuck in one spot.

My hands were bound behind my back along with my feet were all tied up. I opened my eyes to see that the bed sheet was wrapped around my body and secured in place by heavy industrial rope.

This chick wasn’t messing around and probably knows more about the supernatural than I do. The only thing that I could move was my head so I glanced around and saw the interior of a speedboat. Somewhat new too.

Over near the front of the boat was the seat and Luna was sitting in it manning the controls. She didn’t have to look back when she said, “Bout time yer up kid. I’ll need your help to make sure things go smoothly.”

“Where are you taking me?” I yelled then grimaced as the boat took flight over a small wake. It skipped a few going up and down. Ugh if this keeps up then I’m going to puke.

Luna replied, “I’ve decided to not hand you over to him. Instead, if you work with me, I think we can get my friend back without you becoming his bounty for the witches.”

“Huh?” My brows rose. The motor of the boat hummed and whirred as we skipped over more wakes. I grumbled, “can you at least stop making the boat go over such rough waters?”

“Can’t.” She said still staring ahead then added, “the sea is rough tonight. Feels like we got a storm coming on.”

“Then why are you doing the exchange out at sea?” I asked.

Her hand moved over the throttle and pulled the lever up to slow the boat down. She leaned over the back of the chair with her elbow hanging over. She replied, “Easy. Home turf advantage.”

The bottom of my stomach dropped out as I realized what she was saying. We were on the Atlantic. Probably miles from shore. What’s worse is that I can’t even swim and based on the rumors that if you’re a werewolf then it doesn’t matter because we sink regardless.

“Take me back.” I groaned. The constant rolling of the boat tumbled my innards and I had to swallow hard to not throw up. Luna smirked turned back around in her seat and kept the boat going straight.

Overhead the dark clouds let the moon peek through revealing her ever full glory. Internally my wolf howled in delight as the rest of my mental state crumpled into a shivering heap. Tonight, why does it have to be tonight?

“You won’t make it.” She said and I turned my head her way. In her hand was the same green bottle tilted my way. I reached over and took it.

The glass felt cool in my hands and heavy. Bringing the opening up to my lips I tilted it and let the brew slid down the neck. It brushed against my lips and tingled. Bubbles burst and played along my tastebuds as the heady scent of hops wafted up to my nostrils.

My first beer. I thought my old man would be the first to share this experience with me. It stung a little as it slid down my throat and settled in my stomach. The ball of nerves that were bunched up loosened and the pain dulled.

The bottle made a small thud when I placed it on the wood floor as I exhaled. A slow warmth covered me and lessened the pain some more. I smiled. The woman nudged my shoulder and asked, “Feeling better?”

I couldn’t help but smile as I replied back, “Yeah. A little.”

Her eyebrows rose as she asked, “You didn’t answer me before but your name is Daniel, right?”

“Yeah.” I said then asked, “What’s your name?”

Her face screwed up a bit as she pulled back. The way that she scrunched her nose was kind of cute. If she didn’t kidnap me I think I would like her. Whoa, hold on, her? She’s like at least seven years older than me.

She let out a bubbly laugh that tingled my insides as she remarked in a southern accent, “Ha! What do ya know. Yer right.”

The girl shifted on the floor then held out her right hand to me and said, “I’m Luna. Luna Shimmers and I’m a mermaid.”

I arched an eyebrow as I took another pull of the beer. I’d have to admit that it was good. Though I shouldn’t be drinking it because I am underage. Oh well. I guess just this once. It seems to be calming my inner wolf.

Luna narrowed her eyes at me then said, “You don’t believe that I’m a mermaid, do ya?”

“Not really.” I replied after I put the beer back down. “Because mermaids are supposed to be in the water and not running around on land.”

“Ha.” She flashed a grin then added, “Kid, you’re out and out wrong.”

She jabbed a finger into my chest and said, “What ya think ya know ‘bout the supernatural world is all wrong.”

Her plump lips were so close to mine. If I moved a little more I could kiss her. Luna pulled away then crossed her arms. I leaned towards her and poked her arm, “Then educate me.”

“Naw.” She turned her head away then sat cross legged on the floor. “Don’t have time.”

Again, I arched an eyebrow then remembered. I blurted out, “Wait, you’re really handing me over to that guy on the phone?”

My heart pounded as time stood still for that moment. Everything became clear as I stared down at the beer bottle. She did say something about beer to that man on the phone. Oh no.

I threw a look her way and she watched with cautious eyes. Her stance was guarded as my surrounding spun. Things went sideways in my vision as my head connected with the wood flooring. Slurred words escaped my lips, “You tricked me.”

Luna reached down and tousled my hair then said, “Sorry kid. I have no choice.”

My eyelids closed then opened twice before they closed once more. After that I felt her pick me up off the floor and place me back in the bed. Luna pulled the covers up over my body before the world faded away completely.

Fabric. Soft and sensual glided over bare skin. Sweat intermingled with the scent of lavender. I rolled over with a groan and clung onto the soft cloud that supported my pounding head. The light was dim and revealed a dark bedroom.

Between blurred to clear vision indicated when my werewolf side was kicking in to help me out. Further in the house I overheard someone talking. Female. She must be on the phone for I don’t hear the other person.

Concentrating harder I listened and heard the low voice of a man reply, “Midnight. Have him ready…”

The man sucked in his breath then added, “… and sedated.”

“Not a problem.” The woman said. Glass clinked in the other room. She added, “Beer should do the trick.”

“It better.” He spat then disconnected. The woman let out a huff followed by a low click. Footsteps, bare it sounded like, walked on the vinyl flooring followed by the sound of a fridge door being opened and closed.

Metal clinked on a surface then rattled for a few rotations before it became silent. Another loud sigh came from the other room followed by loud gulps and guzzle. She complained aloud, “What did I ever see in that jerk?”

I sat up and rubbed my pounding head then doubled over. Cripes, my stomach hurts. With quick shallow breaths the pain eased into a dull thud. Easing myself over to the edge of the bed I placed my feet on the hardwood floor. Its cool surface sent soothing sensations up through my legs.

With little effort I pushed myself up and walked over to the door that was left open. Looking both way I saw light down at one end while the other lead into another dark room. Sharp pain raced through my body as I clutched hold of the doorframe and did shallow breaths.

What the heck is going on? How did I get here? Where is here? Who is that woman in the other room? Should I escape?

I squeezed my eyes shut as more white hot pain soared throughout my entire being. Wood cracked under the intense grip. I let one hand go to see the indentations of where my fingers had once been.

Footsteps whispered on the floor behind me. They got closer as I held onto the doorframe for support as another wave of pain radiated throughout me. Ice kissed the back of my neck and I straightened up.

She was too fast for she sidestepped my attack before I even had a chance to slash her with my readied claws. Where’d those claws come from?

My knees shook and buckled as my back slid down the doorframe. I sat there on the floor and stared at the ground. Mixed emotions raged on in me as hot tears brimmed and threatened to fall.

The woman knelt down in front and held a green bottle in front of me. Looking up she gave me a weak smile. It was warm. This was the same college girl that accused me of taking photos of her the other night.

She tucked the short blond hair behind her then said, “Here. This might help with the pain.”

“I don’t want it.” I said then grabbed my knees and rested my chin on them. I tilted my head away so that she wouldn’t see the lone tear rolling down my cheek. Yeah, call me a wuss but things have been too much.

The woman sat down on the floor and took another pull from her drink then asked, “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No.” I said and sniffled.

“Geez.” She pushed the green bottle closer to me. “At least take a sip if you ain’t gonna talk.”

“Whatever.” I replied. Why won’t she just leave?

She scooted closer and turned around to face the same way that I was… she was so close that our shoulders were almost touching. I swallowed and tried to keep a steady breath.

“You know,” She began and leaned up against the wall, “you might feel better if you’d just talk.”

I sniffed and rubbed my eyes then replied, “I’m not a girl. Guys don’t talk about their feelings.”

“Oh for the love of Triton.” She complained. “I’m trying to do ya favor kid.”

“Don’t call me kid.” I said and hugged my knees even harder.

Her hand picked up the green bottle and offered it up to me again. She said, “Sorry. Force of habit. It’s Daniel, right?”

I stayed silent. She’s just trying to make it seem like that she wants to be my friend. But I know there’s more to her silly scheme. Glancing back into the room I stared at the curtains that covered the window and blinds. Could I escape or will she catch me?

Chapter Thirteen ★ Shadow Cont’

Bending down I grabbed ahold of Daniel and hefted him onto my back. Ooaf. He’s a lot heavier than he looks. How can a kid that looks so dang scrawny weigh so much?

The kid grumbled and halved growled in his unconscious state. That’s right he’s a werewolf… well technically a werepup but no matter. Time to get him back to base so I can arrange for the exchange.

Taking another glance around the area I saw parents with their mouths still open as they clutched onto their children’s shoulders. Hmm, guess not all humans are stupid.

With one look back towards the amusement park I shot off in the other direction. The house wasn’t that far and if those Carney creeps even think about getting the drop on me then they’re in for a big surprise.

Readjusting Daniel who rest on my shoulder and on my back I kept on moving taking longer stride than needed. If a person were to take a closer look then they would know that something ain’t right. At this point I truly don’t care for time is a ticking and Danny boy is Pearl’s only hope.

Ah, the broken fence from night before last’s adventure with alligator dude. A quick chill zipped up my spine as I shook. That guy was creepy but crocodile man is even creepier. Especially with their one eye that looks dead and stares off into space.

The sun still hung high in the sky as we both crawled through the narrow opening in the fenced yard. Daniel’s head hit one of the beams and he grumbled. Whoops.

He’s going to feel that when he wakes up. Hopefully he’ll wake up when Ray’s here and I can direct the werewolf at that traitor. I can only wish that the exchange will work out in my favor.

Wood creaked under our weight as each footstep echoed a dull thud. The air was hot and sticky which was the norm for down here in the south. Your either hot and sticky, wet and sticky or cold and wet. Especially for Savannah, GA.

The last step was a bit short and we almost fell head first onto the porch. Lucky I caught myself and did a small stumble as we ran into the screen door. It protested with a slight metallic groan.

I turned to one side and placed Daniel down on the wooden porch next to one of the old rocking chairs that Pearl and I used to sit in on cool evenings. The screen door got stuck but with a yank and a pull it opened then slammed into the porch light.

Glass emitted a small crack from the fixture. Oh for Triton’s sake. I glanced at the light and noticed that only one pane had a spider web like break in it. Okay that can be fixed later. Got to get the kid inside for now.

I grabbed ahold of the brass doorknob and turned it. Pearl and I never locked up the last time we were here. All because yours truly got bit by the same adolescent werewolf that snored loudly on my porch.

Again, I hefted Daniel onto my shoulders and got up with a grunt. Cool air kissed my skin as we both walked through the door. Ah yes the glories of modern technology and may Triton smile on the luxuries of air conditioning.

The kitchen light was off but I didn’t need it because there was still daylight outside. Daniel groaned again as we meandered through the rooms with cluttered clothing, empty pizza boxes and beer bottles on the floor. Down the dark hallway I went into the room that had its door ajar.

Daylight streamed in through the cracks of the curtains and blinds that hung in the room. I placed Daniel down onto the unmade bed and tucked him in. He grabbed a pillow and snuggled up close to it. A warm smile grew across my lips before I patted him on the shoulder and left the room.

I closed the door slightly so that if he woke up then I could hear him. Not that this mermaid needed to do that but its something that most humans take as cues to know that someone is there for them.

Walking back into the kitchen I scooted a chair from the counter and cupboards back over to the table. On it was a knocked over box of Cheerios that has spilt its delicious contents onto the surface. Picking a few up to eat I pulled out my phone and sat down at the table.

The honey taste of crunch soothed my nerves as I went to the phone logs and dialed the last number.

It rung twice before the person picked up but didn’t say a word. I swallowed the cheerio and let out a shaky breath then said, “I’ve got him. When do you want to meet?”
