The first thing that came to mind were the people that were about to witness that monsters do exist. Families were starting to go out with their little ones for a stroll and ice cream. With so many innocents around Daniel cannot be allowed to change.

“Daniel,” I pleaded and held my hands up then continued, “calm down. I didn’t mean to slap you.”

He took a step towards me and growled, “that’s your problem.”

Casting cautious looks at idle moms and dads with their little wee ones in tow I continued, “Daniel… stop and think. There are innocents around us.”

“Again,” He shook his head and took another step. “That’s your problem.”

A miasma of red rose from his skin and gave off intense heat. His teeth elongated as his face started to grow outwards along with his ears that grew into fine tips.

More growls erupted from his lips and he reached out with his clawed hand as I took a quick step backwards. His fingers whooshed on by my nose and I blinked. Daniel tried to attack again but stopped and grabbed his stomach.

Now’s my chance or risk everything. I bolted forward, grabbed his shoulder and kneed him in the stomach. He crumpled to the ground. Snarls still came from his lips but slammed my fist into the back of his head.

Daniel went limp. I stood back up and looked around. Parents were either filming or talking on the phone as their children watched with their mouths wide open. Forgotten scoops of ice cream laid on the ground melting in the heat of the sun.

Crud. Come on Luna… think. Gotta think of something or these mortals will know that monsters are real. I glanced down at Daniel who was starting to regain consciousness. Dang it. I don’t have time to clean up this mess.

A man’s voice said, “Say that’s some pretty cool effects. How’d y’all do those things?”

“Huh?” I asked as my head shot up.

He indicated to Daniel who was on the ground and asked, “Are y’all doing a movie or a TV show?”

Score. Perfect alibi. I flashed my most perfect smile then said, “Why yes. Yes we are.”

The guy replied, “Cool. ‘bout time they started doing some filming here.”

“Mmm.” I agreed.

He turned to me and held out his hand. I took it and we shook as he said, “Pleasure to meet ya miss. Can’t wait to tell my girlfriend. Mind telling me the name of the show y’all are filming?”

Shoot. Okay Luna come up with something snappy. Glancing around then down I replied, “Ah… the show? Um… I think it’s called I was a Southern Teenage Werewolf.

We both let go and he rubbed the back of his neck then replied, “Kind of long, ain’t it?”

Putting my hands into my pockets and keeping an eye on Daniel who continued to groan, I said, “Not really. Anyways it’s our working title for now. We might change it when it comes time to air it.”

“Okay. Well, I’ll see ya around.” The guy nods and walks away then stops. He peers over his shoulder then asks, “Do you need help with him?”

I shook my head and said, “Naw. I got it but thanks.”

He scowled right back at me then replied, “No, you weren’t.”

Placing my hands on my hips and narrowed my eyes then I asked, “How would you know, kid?”

“Cause my dad would’ve blown you away with his gun.” He said then crossed his arms as a self-satisfying smirk grew on his face.

“Don’t get cocky, kid.” I said then jabbed him in the chest as I took a step forward then added, “because I saw your dad leave and he didn’t even know that I was there.”

Daniel’s face blanched as his arms dropped to the side. His mouth opened and closed but now noise came out. He was totally speechless. Good. Now we can get a move on without his whining giving us away.

I motioned with my hand as I said, “C’mon. We gotta hustle if we ain’t gonna get caught.”

He kicked a rock down the sidewalk and shoved his hands into his jean pockets as he glared right back at me. Sheesh, what an attitude.

“Whatever.” I tossed my hand in the air, turned then snatched his hand in mine to make sure he didn’t try and run off. I grumbled, “We gotta move, kid.”

He grumped right on back, “Quit calling me ‘kid’.”

I tugged harder as we moved on down the walkway towards my impromptu base camp. Daniel kept pulling his arm as we walked but I kept a hard grip on his hand. What is his deal?

His fingers started to pry at my iron grip so I stopped and looked his way. I asked, “Got a problem?”

“Yeah.” He pointed down at his and my hand. “Can you let go?”

I shook my head, “Nope.”

Daniel bent his knee and thrust his foot out. As his sneaker came closer to its target it became clear to what he was trying to kick. I barely sidestepped out of the way before he made contact with my shin.

Yanking on his hand again I growled, “Will ya quit it? If we make a fuss here then people will call the cops on us. Ya want that kid?”

He stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry. Of all the indignant little starfish dookies. My hand reached out with the palm open and struck the side of his face.

The area on his right side turned red as he reached up with his left hand and felt the residue sting of the attack. His eyes flashed between his normal color and gold as tears brimmed his eyelids.

“Ah,” I said and added as my eyebrows rose, “Sorry?”

The kid’s left hand closed into a fist and pulled back as his eyes stuck gold. A deep rumble traveled up from his chest and emerged from his mouth as a deafening roar.

Eep. I let his hand go as Daniel begun to change in broad daylight into his wolfen form.

I reached back and snatched Daniels hand and yelled, “Run.”

The kid followed my lead as we both booked it down the road. Longman gave chase but he wasn’t fast like me. I snatched Daniel up on my back.

The kid cried out, “Hey.”

But, I didn’t care because we needed to get distance between the Carneys and the people who were watching the whole scene go down.

Daniel pounded his fists against my back and yelled in my ear, “Let me go.”

I shook my head, “No can do kiddo.”

“Why?” He cried again as his punches became weak and he settled down. He asked, “Why, me?”

Concentrating on my feet and the sidewalk I kept my eyes peeled for anymore shadow snares which is what caught Daniel earlier. I mumbled back to him, “Dunno. Seems like a whole bunch of crazy haywire stuff is happening now.”

“Take me home.” He whined and buried his face into my neck. His wet tears trickled down my back which made it even more difficult for me as I replied, “Sorry, no can do.”

I chanced a look over my shoulder to see if they were still following us. No sight of them but that didn’t mean squat if they were to do a sneak around. Darting to my right I hustled back to the house where I first met Daniel.

We should be safe there for a little while so I can call Ray up for the exchange. I don’t need the Carneys stealing my bait for the dang merlock. I’m going to lay a smack down on my ex and get my friend back.

The afternoon sun beat down with a strong heat causing sweat to stream down my face. My breathing getting heavier as the boy seemed to feel like he weigh fifty times more than earlier. I slowed down to a jog then let the boy slip down onto the ground as we stopped.

He landed on his butt and let out a groan. I turned to face him then said, “Come on, get up. We still have to keep moving.”

Daniel picked himself back up and threw a dirty look my way. I added, “Don’t think of running because I know where you live. Beside it ain’t safe there.”

His jaw dropped as his eyes bugged out of his head. He was speechless for a moment before he asked, “How do you know?”

“I was there last night.” I replied and glared back at him.

How in Triton’s blessings did that girl know that I was following them? Dang it. Am I slipping? Could it be the were-powers are messing with my mer-powers?

No, it ain’t possible. There’s more to this girl than what she appears to be. So far this town is seeping its secrets in a slow drip. All of our records were wrong.

I still can’t believe the commander, my dad, refused to help. He said that Pearl was a necessary sacrifice to keep the boy safe. Also I was supposed to report back to base.

Like I would anyways. That ain’t my memo. Never will I leave a friend in the hands of the enemy. I will save Pearl even if it costs me my life.

Another uneasy feeling swept over me. I glanced up to see the girl searching for her followers. That would be yours truly. Being the quick one I dove into a nearby trashcan to wait it out.

Ick, leftover days old ice cream mixed with half eaten burritos. I clapped my hand over my nose to quell the overwhelming stench of rancid beef and cream. Rumbles of protests gurgled from my stomach but I swallowed to hold it down.

The girl mentioned something to the boys over her shoulder and they picked up the pace. However, Daniel was slowing down even though he was fighting to go faster. The more he fought the greater the resistance.

In an instant he was thrown forward and he fell head over heels and tumbled towards a big dark blue metal post office box. The back of his head slammed into it and he slid to the ground. He tried to get up but his limbs gave out and he fell back down to the ground.

Out from the shadows was a man who was unnaturally tall. He wore a red and white striped suit with a tall top hat. His hair was tight curls like that of an afro and his face sported a waxed mustache curled on both ends.

The man walked forward with a cane in his right hand then came to a stop right in front of Daniel. That uneasy feeling became worse as he bent down and said, “We’ve been waiting for you.”

I wracked my brain trying to remember who he was and what kind of threat he posed to Daniel. It wasn’t until the other figures that emerged did it dawn on me who and what they were…

… The Carneys

It had been years since they’ve shown their dark rotten existence. I thought we mermaids had blown them into next year… or so that’s what our supposedly dead Agent did for us in the past. Apparently, that ain’t the case.

Croc-man and the Siamese sisters stood behind the Longman cackling as he extended his bony long fingers towards Daniel.

Daniel let out an ear-splitting scream that would shame any little girl in these here parts.

Shoot, I don’t have the luxury to sit here in waste as they take my chance to get Pearl back away from me. Pulling myself up I launched myself out of the trashcan and did a triple flip in the air.

Then landed flat on my face between the Longman and Daniel. Ow. That stings.

I placed my hand on the ground and peeled my face away from the cement and faced the Longman then said, “Back off.”

His upper lip curled upwards as he pulled back his hand and gave me a look of disgusts. He replied, “Ugh. Vile creature. Aren’t you a long ways from your territory?”

“This one,” I pointed back at Daniel, “is under my protection.”

Croc-man burbled, “SSSShe’sss wrong. Contract hasss been broken.”

I moved to the side and stared right back at the half-bloated corpse slash crocodile man then said, “Shut it, luggage.”

The Siamese sisters laughed and Croc-man growled back at her. The Longman stepped into my line of sight and bent down to see me eye to eye.

His lips pursed as he twiddled one end of his mustache then added, “I believe Croc is right. You merpeople have no jurisdiction in this place no more.”

“Wrong.” I glared back at him. “The merlock is working with you thus our contract is not broken.”

He flashed me an eerie grin with yellow crooked teeth. The auburn hair added to the creep factor and sent chills down my spine.

Longman said, “Ah, you might want to relook at the contract. It does not matter whom the merlock is working for… it merely states that if a merlock enters these parts then the contract is null and void.”

“No,” I croaked and backed up. Breached contract or not they were not getting Daniel. I muttered to Daniel, “Get up kid.”

Daniel groaned and made a weak attempt at getting up. I said a bit louder this time, “Kid, get yer butt up and moving. Ain’t no time right now fer yer belly-aching.”

He tried again as he grabbed one side of his head. As he was doing his best to stand up I noticed Croc-man and the sisters moving closer. Shoot, I don’t have time to transform into my battle mode.

Longman turned and saw his comrades moving in closer and said, “Stop.”

The two stopped and waited as Longman twisted back to me and said, “I do not want to battle where the mortal can see us. Surely we can talk this out?”

Glancing around I noticed there were several people out and staring right at us. He was right. First rule of any supernatural creature walking among mankind is to not attract attention to yourself.

I stared right at Croc-man and the sisters then pointed as I said, “What about them? Don’t they stick out like sore thumbs?”

Longman grinned again then said, “They are using a cloaking enchantment. People do not see them as you see them.”

He leaned in closer and added, “They appear to be a small girl and boy out on a walk with their father and being bullied by you.”

A shock rocked the very core as I searched the eyes of the onlookers and noticed they were pointing right at me. Some already had phones out possibly calling the cops. Dang it.

I spat, “This is why I hate witches and their cronies. Y’all cheat.”

He took another step closer to me as Daniel stood up and used the mailbox to steady himself. Longman said, “I would suggest that you and the boy come with us if you do not want to cause a scene.”

Dang it. I ground my teeth and chewed on the side of my cheek. He had me fair and square. If I were to continue on to a fight then I would be the one locked up and not these psychos.

Longman tapped his cane on the ground and grabbed my attention. He asked, “So, what have you decided?”

Chapter Twelve ★ Ditch

。☆✼★Daniel ━★✼☆。

We’re being followed? Who in the world could be following us? Jacob increased his pace and started jogging to catch up to Penny. I searched around us and held my arms as a shiver went up my spine.

Could it be that man from last night? Or could Penny be messing with us again? After all she is Aaron’s twin sister. Still this feeling that doesn’t want to shake off of me clings to my very core. I willed my feet to move faster.

As I got behind Penny I whispered, “Who’s following us? Do you know?”

“No clue.” She replied and kept her eyes forward. She let out a huff and said, “We got to run. This punk won’t let up.”

“We already running.” I said between breaths.

Penny tossed a glance my way then replied, “This isn’t running. Quit your whining. We got to hustle if we don’t want to get caught.”

Jacob also threw me a Don’t be such a baby look just before he matched Penny’s speed. The two left me in the dust. The more I fought to pick up the pace the more it felt like I was running in a tub of molasses.

The eerie feeling grew as my friend got further away from me. I reached out and tried to call his name but nothing came. What the?

My hand went to my throat as I tried again to call his name but still not a single sound escaped my lips. Then my knee gave out and tumbled my body to the ground. It rolled and tossed across the ground and came to a hard stop against a hard metal blue surface.

Why haven’t they stopped or noticed that I’m not with them? What’s going on?

I laid there on the ground breathing hard. The steady thud welled up in my head as my ears rung. The world was a bit blurry but nothing had faded to black, yet.

As I turned my head the world spun with it. I grabbed my face and groaned. That’s when the tall dark figure emerged from the shadows.

He was taller than most people. My eyes continued to trail up his height as I fought back the urge to vomit because of the constant spinning. The man dressed in a vertical red and white striped suit with a matching top hat walked forward with a cane in one hand and his finger on his long wax styled mustache.

Bending over his auburn bushy like curly hair stayed in place as he flashed a grin at me then said, “We’ve been waiting for you.”

The feeling struck deep in my gut as I searched for my friends. They were gone. I tried to get up but fell back down for the world refused to let me free of its spinning spell. I’m in deep trouble if I can’t get away and fast.

Two more figures came from the shadows and shredded away my last remaining hopes of escaping. They snickered as they got closer and I did what I could at that moment.

I screamed like a little girl.
